who are we, where we at?

topic posted Sun, October 15, 2006 - 10:35 PM by  Jamie
I was thinking of investigating coffeeshops and cafes with the intention of suggesting a get-together for us all, but I don't know where we're concentrated (should I pick one in the city, east bay?). I've noticed a lot of people from the bay area though, so I thought maybe we could do introductions and inventory of sorts.

plus I'm new, and I like to get to know y'all

1)Where do you live?

2)do you have a favorite coffee shop you'd like to suggest?

3)favorite hobby/creative-pass-time/medium?

    1) Oakland.

    2) No, but i favor places with lots of comfortable seating, if possible. and not too busy.

    3) philosophy/science/computers/tech/music/movies... ummm, n' stuff.

i don't know cafe int'l, but i am definitely going to vote for east bay locations first. unfortunately, i'm not a big coffee drinker, so i don't really know much of anyplace around here. i know that i pass two or three on shattuck regularly... nomad cafe (not good for meetings) and asmarina cafe (unknown). that's all i've got right now. i'll have to ask nicole for ideas.

    1) Also in Oakland.

    2) Well, I'll be selfish and vote for East Bay spots as well. ;) Gaylord's on Piedmont is nice, but often crowded. Nomad is also nice, but small. There are lots of Berkeley spots that are bigger - but usually pretty busy. What about something like Nabolom - it's a collectively-run bakery.

    3) Hobbies? Activism, ecology, politics, music (punk, indie, world, hip-hop, electronic), biking, camping, hikling, climbing...

...which makes three (not including SOs). what should quorum be?

nicole told me that the east bay poly group holds meetings at au coquelet on university, and it was an ok space. she also thought village grounds could work, on shattuck in berkeley. she thought it might feel more private.

I am not positive about this being the same organization, but...

I recently signed up for a listserv of what I THOUGHT was the poly group that meets in Berkeley. The first and only message i got was the moderator stepping down due to lack of response. Anybody know when or if they still they meet?

well, i see posts about meetings on tribe occasionally. that's all i know.

lack of response? are polys hibernating for the winter or something?

anyway, i already did the general poly group thing in arizona. it's fine, but there tends to be a deficiency in people from our generation. perhaps they're intimidated, or perhaps they're just looking for something more in common than just a sexual viewpoint. personally, i think it's more helpful/interesting to chat with people at about the same place along the path of discovery as myself, and it wouldn't hurt for the conversation to flow into generationally-shared topics. so that's why i'm interested in poly "TNG" meetings.

true true. I think part of the "problem" we're having finding other people to talk to is the resistance of our generation to label ourselves. Which I totally understand. We're all just out their fighting to be ourselves, so we're having to find new ways of connecting with people. I dunno, its just an idea I guess.

well, i din't mean to imply that the problem lies with us. the "deficiency" is in reference to the meetings, which are low in numbers of us under 35s. it's not as much a difference of our generation over others, but that people are separated from others by the age in which we are born. time dictates where we are in our careers, social habits and other explorations. plus, it affects our sensibilities, tolerances and the shared entertainment space. so naturally, when a group shares some of these common threads, it makes exploring connections easier.

but sure, there's an aspect to the situation that feels like resistance. that could also be due to uncertainty, a very common feeling amongst the young. which is another good reason for under-35 meetings. at least if you know most everyone else in the group is uncertain, too, you might feel a little bit better.

i wasn't trying to imply that you were trying to imply... oh never mind...

Yeah, I agree with you about the value of talking with people who are at the same place in life as you are, aside from definitive generational differences. I hear you on the uncertainty thing, too. I think that uncertainty can work to our advantage, if we let it. It can allow us to know ourselves more candidly, be more honest with ourselves, and look at our selves with eyes open to whatever we may find. More people should be less certain.

yes, i wasn't implying that you're were implying that i was implying, either. or inferring. or whatever. the perils of internet communication. :)

anyways... i agree. so, on to the actual meeting, then? we've got at least 4 + SOs, now, so we should probably just pick a place and time. we'll be tied up until next sunday, but after that, most any day is fine. also, i nominate you as "the decider", because you seem to have the drive. :)

    Dallas, Oregon.

2)do you have a favorite coffee shop you'd like to suggest?
Hehe. Not that you could get to. "Chance Of Rain" in Portland, "Coffee Time" also in Stumptown, for late night meetings, and "Coffee House Cafe" in Salem all come to mind for the willamette valley.

    3)favorite hobby/creative-pass-time/medium?
Ummm, I love the S.C.A., and have been attending events since I was Fourteen. It seems kinda geeky to some folks. I am also working on finishing my first album.

    1) East Bay, prolly in Oakland (I'm moving atm)

    2) I like Gaylord's in the Piedmont district of Oakland. And not just cause of the name. :) They have frilly coffee drinks pretty cheap.

    3) I like to knit, and I like to fly kites. Oh, and bake.
